STONEWARE CARE

With proper care, stoneware can last a lifetime!

Stoneware is a type of clay body specifically designed to withstand high firing temperatures (around 1200°C/ 2192 °F). The high-firing process transforms the clay, making it vitrified (non-porous) and creating a strong, dense material that is watertight and resistant to scratches and chips, making it ideal for functional pottery.

I have personally thoroughly tested all of my clay bodies and glazes through daily use in our own busy home, including multiple daily dishwasher cycles and microwave use. ( With the exception of gold luster products which are not microwave safe) . Though I am confident that they are hardy enough to withstand many years of daily dishwasher cycles,  hand washing your stoneware pottery will  guarantee the longevity of the glaze.

Below are some tips on how to care for your stoneware pieces:

  • Never use metal scouring pads or abrasive cleaners: These can scratch the glaze, making it more prone to staining.
  • Clean promptly: Rinsing your stoneware directly after use can protect the glaze from discoloration. Never allow colored foods or liquids to sit for extended periods.
  • Pre-soak: If staining occurs, soak your stoneware in warm, soapy water or a baking soda paste before washing.
  • Avoid highly acidic foods like tomatoes or citrus as they can etch the glaze over time, potentially leading to staining.
  • Use rinse aid: Soft metal particles like aluminum in some cutlery can sometimes leave marks on pottery. This tends to happen more easily with mat glazes, and using a rinse aid helps to prevent this. (Goods affected by cutlery marks are not accepted as defects.)
  • Stoneware is sensitive to thermal shock:  A cold plate placed in a hot oven will crack!

Following proper care helps preserve the original look and feel of your stoneware!
